I am Ivan Luk. I returned to Hong Kong in 2016 after having lived and worked in the U.S. for 30 years. I used to be in IT and spent a couple decades working in the financial service industry. I spent the last dozen years prior to returning as a software development manager. Over the years, I have interacted with a wide range of colleagues and clients from software developers to senior executives with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. After returning to Hong Kong I started volunteering as an English tutor for my high school alumni association (Wah Yan College Kowloon). I have taught on-site at three different schools in Tin Shui Wai and I am currently tutoring at a secondary school in Kwai Chung. The goal of the project is to help raise the English level of students in certain areas with a high concentration of underprivileged population. I prepare my own teaching materials and usually focus on oral communication. I also co-coordinate an online programme to connect oversea alumni with local students to practice oral English. The program was conceived as a platform to provide a practice environment for the underprivileged students in preparation for DSE paper 4. Over the past two years, I have held dozens of these online sessions to help students tackle the discussion forum format. I believe lively discussions of interesting topics is the best way to engage students, especially for those who may lack the confidence to speak the language.
