Born in Hong Kong, Kwan Wai (Kenny) Lung has just graduated from University of North Texas (UNT) with a Master of Music degree in Viola Performance. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). His viola mentors include Dr. Susan Dubois, Dr. Daphne Gerling, and Dr. Felix Ungar. He has also participated in various solo and chamber masterclasses, including those conducted by Roberto Diaz, Jeffery Irvine, and Paul Silverthorne. As a violist, Lung has appeared frequently as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Recently, he won the first prize at the Tuesday Musical Club Young Artist Competition in San Antonio. He performed Telemann Viola Concerto as a soloist with Maestro Paul Leenhouts and UNT Baroque Orchestra in March. As an orchestral musician, Lung has served as the principal violist of HKBU Symphony Orchestra and Collegium Musicum Hong Kong. He had also performed with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Festival Orchestra, Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Orchestra, Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, UNT Symphony Orchestra and UNT Baroque Orchestra. Despite his passion in viola playing, Lung is also enthusiastic about orchestral conducting. He has studied conducting with Maestros Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Kirk Trevor, John Farrer, David Itkin, Clay Couturiaux and Po-kwan Law. He has also conducted UNT Symphony Orchestra, UNT Concert Orchestra, UNT String Orchestra, and HKBU Student Orchestra. He collaborated with Zoltán Csikós and UNT Concert Orchestra, performing Tchaikovsky’s Pezzo Capriccioso for Cello and Orchestra at the UNT Concerto Competition Winners’ Concert in February. He also held a conducting recital in January, featuring Bartok’s Divertimento for String Orchestra, Barber Adagio for Strings and Elgar Serenade for Strings.
