Having studied in both Canadian and American international schools, I have a native proficiency in English while still understanding what it is like to learn English as a second language. My multicultural background enables me to communicate with people no matter their background or age. This skill in addition to my flexibility were useful as I tutored my fellow classmates at school. Hi, I am Mark. I recently graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Science, and now I am back in Hong Kong on my extended summer break. While extremely flexible on the content of tutoring sessions depending on the needs and urgency of my students, I tend to focus on conversational English through verbal interactions, and various media, as there simply is no better way to learn a language. My American friends often said I have an ingenious British accent, while English people I met often guess that I am from New York. But the fact of the matter is, I went to a local school in Hong Kong until 4 years ago when I departed to the States to study music, and later communications. I understand the struggle. I am definitely not claiming that you can speak like Gordon Ramsay after a couple months of tutoring under my guidance, but I can promise you an environment favorable to understanding, familiarizing, and getting comfortable with interacting in English. It matters not that you get good grades but can\\\'t seem to converse with native speakers efficiently, can read but cannot speak to save your life, cannot grasp the idea of grammar, or just utter shite with the language. We are all born to learn languages, some just need a little nudge.

I am a year 2 HKU student. I am Korean, but studied in an international school in China (Guangzhou) so I can speak Mandarin (but not Cantonese). I am majoring in Education and Psychology, and I can teach best on English.

At the age of seven my younger brother and I transferred to a primary school in Hong Kong while my parents stayed in Guangzhou. It was a difficult time: I had to assume the role of caregiver and place my brothers needs above my own. Furthermore at twelve I realized I was attracted to girls. I stayed in denial of my sexual orientation for over four years. I used to think that being a member of a sexual minority was abnormal and unacceptable I was even told that I was sick. Later as an out member of the LGBT community I faced discrimination in Hong Kong. As a lesbian a vegetarian and a mainlander my failure to conform made me a prime target for bullying. Furthermore within the Hong Kong local curriculum science was not highly regarded for girls. My allgirls school only selected our science grades at 70% GPA weight compared to humanities subjects. We were taught that girls should focus on humanities and languages instead of science and math. In other words what I was passionate about was less important than other subjects that did not feel right for me. After transferring to an international school I was finally presented with the idea that even though there are fewer women than men in the field of physics the individual contributions of women have been significant. Finally I value myself and my talents regardless of the recognition and opinions of others.and Wiping out ignorancebased resentful attitudes towards members of sexual minorities is my dream. I know the road will be long. I have no doubt that Hong Kong will be LGBT friendly someday but currently there are no laws to protect us. Its disheartening and terrifying. Thats why I find so much comfort when I am immersing myself in math and physics as if my burden has been lifted. I want to be part of an environment where for the first time in my life I will be defined for my achievements and abilities instead of solely through the lens of my sexual orientation and my gender.
