I have more than five years’ experience in education having undertaken teaching posts in Australia, China and Hong Kong. I have taught a variety of English courses including general, business and academic English and exam preparation courses for IGCSE, IELTS, TOEFL, FCE, PET, KET, SAT, SSAT and HKDSE. I have taught adults, teenagers and young children from around the world in single and multi-cultural classroom contexts. Over the years, I have learnt to consider lesson aims carefully and tailor lessons to meet student needs, whether they be learning language skills, academic skills, or preparing for examinations. I have three years’ experience teaching in secondary schools in China and Hong Kong. In my most recent teaching post at a local Hong Kong secondary school I taught HKDSE exam preparation lessons and was a form four homeroom teacher. During this post I further deepened my understanding of ‘whole child’ development and I appreciate the importance of fostering a healthy sense of cultural identity in teenagers and opportunity to develop socially and psychologically through learning. I have several years’ experience teaching academic English. In Australia, I taught IELTS preparation lessons focusing on the fundamentals of essay writing, higher level grammar and academic English. In this post I lead a department of seven teachers and was responsible for allocating duties, creating professional development programs, creating and editing examinations and course and material development. My teaching duties consisted of instructing general English, IELTS, TOEFL and IGCSE preparation classes. I also conducted the IGCSE speaking exams on behalf of Cambridge University and provided feedback sessions to ensure progression. Regarding my qualifications, I recently completed a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which is a 34 week course and includes two six week block teaching practices. Prior to this, I attained a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in applied linguistics and Chinese language. This course focused on the science, nature and function of language, how it is used in society, second language acquisition and intercultural communication. I have continued studying Mandarin since graduation which has given me firsthand experience being a second language learner. I therefore understand the difficulties that students need to overcome and I share my insights to cultivate confidence and motivation. I have also completed the Cambridge English Language Teaching for Adults certificate (CELTA), of which I achieved a Pass B (top 25%).
