Introduction
Emily Shek was born and raised in Hong Kong and started studying music when she was 6 years old. Her first instrument of study was the guzheng (Chinese zither) at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) under Man Wai Zhen and Luo Jing. When she was 12 years old, she started learning the suona (a reeded aerophone) at the Hong Kong Government’s Music Office. During those years, Shek was a member of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra, the HKAPA Junior Chinese Orchestra, and the HKAPA Guzheng Ensemble. In 2016, Emily began her education at BYUHawaii and started learning percussion under Dr. Darren Duerden and instrumental conducting under Ernest Taniguchi. While at the university, she has been a member of Shaka Steel, the World Jazz Orchestra, Ko’olauloa Symphonic Winds, and Ka Pa Kani Ko’ele O Laie. She was featured as a soloist with the Hawaii Symphonic Band performing the Butterfly Lovers’ Concerto. On top of this, she has been an active face of the music department through solo performances in devotionals, donorfunded events, and in the “Scholarship Competition Winners’ Recital” in 2018. She is now finished her master degree of Class 2020 in Music Production, Technology, and Innovation in Berklee College of Music.
