Hello, I am Janis, an undergraduate at Royal Northern College of Music. I achieved a diploma (LTCL) in violin and grade 8 in piano. I had spent my secondary education in the UK as a boarder since I was twelve. Now I am having my undergraduate education at Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. These eight years of overseas education without any immediate guidance from my next of kin means that I have to take care of myself on my own, organizing from studies to chores and inevitably, making decisions that suit my needs the most and coping with the situation the best at that moment. Being alone in a foreign country offers me a great opportunity to recognize and practice how to live and work independently. I am an approachable person. I like to meet up with different people and share thoughts with them on any kind of topic. During my studies in the UK, I have come across borders from around the world. Close friendship lets me have a more indepth understanding of other countries and cultures and a valuable chance to learn how to get along well with others of different cultures. I am fully aware of the importance of respect and consideration between people. From this experience, I have improved my interpersonal skills that I have the confidence to develop a close rapport with people of different personalities. As an undergraduate student majoring in Music, creativity is another distinctive attribute that I possess. Composition is one of the components in the module. Apart from music theory, it requires innovative ideas and inspiration from students to complete a piece of work. I have composed several string quartets and solo pieces, which received exceptional appraisal from tutors. One of my music classes is improvisation. Improvisation is to create a solo melody on the spot without any script. It is very challenging and entertaining. In the class, students play as a group and each one leads a solo improvisation. This brings out a trusting and supportive environment which has inspired me to take risks and triggered my creativity.
